News : New Zealand Skeptics Newsletter 7th July 2010
Posted by Jon Donnis on 2010/7/8 6:27:23 (51 reads)

We're delighted to have noted memory researcher Maryann Garry and her
PhD students back at the annual NZ Skeptics conference to show us how
easy it is to be fooled. This is a session well worth attending and
remembering!

To read more about this year's conference and to register via the
handy online registration form, go here:
http://skeptics.org.nz/SK:SKEPCONFERENCE

It's at Butterfly Creek, Tom Pearce Dr, Auckland, 13-15 August. It's
open to non-members (bar the AGM), and very reasonably priced for two
solid days of entertainment and education.

* Homeopathy Campaign Continues

We haven't yet had a response from the NZ Council of Homeopaths
inviting them to join our campaign to discourage pharmacies from
stocking homeopathic products, but we are ever-optimistic. In the
meantime, if you'd like to help out, consider undertaking one or all
of the following:

By all means drop a letter to the editor, or possibly to the Commerce
Commission or Consumer (esp if you are a subscriber), and tell them
you are concerned about this issue, the potential for misleading
labelling, the lack of informed advice and the lack of disclosure
that the products are water and sugar.

If you didn't get a chance to see the Closeup homeopathy item on
Wednesday, here is an online link to the piece:
http://badpsychics.co.uk/au/modules/news/article.php?storyid=282

At the end, Mark Sainsbury mentions that the homeopaths had offered
to do a session on me. Given that the focus of the current issue on
homeopathic products is the inappropriateness of their sale by
pharmacies, we think that a different action would make far more sense
than simply offering to do a homeopathic consult on one person.

We're overdosing a bit on news at the moment, but just to keep you up
with the state of play, the NZ Skeptics and Skeptics in the Pub are
running a homeopathic overdose demonstration in Christchurch this
Saturday (10.30am, Jan 30, in front of the Cathedral in the Square --
come along if you can!).

TV3 should be filming it, so for those of you who can't make it here,
you may see it on the TV3 news that night.

I've appended below the press release we put out about our support
for the UK-based 1023 campaign which is encouraging such
demonstrations to highlight the dangers of pharmacies touting diluted
water as medicine.

Cheers,
Vicki Hyde

News : Ineffective "retractions": How to make false claims and get away with it
Posted by Jon Donnis on 2009/12/30 4:47:31 (219 reads)

During the past week, bemused TV viewers in Australia may have noticed a brief TV commercial relating to a retraction by EASE-a-Cold.

I say "bemused" because it's an ad you could easily "see" several times without taking in much of it and certainly without understanding the context.

In my view, that's perfectly understandable. I think it's an ad that has been deliberately designed NOT to be effective.
